Marina Development in Scotland : Economic and Social Impact Assessment

Marina The Scottish marina sector contributes more to the economy than the golf market. Like golf, Scotland is world renowned for sailing as it boasts some of the greatest sailing waters in the world. As with golf, marinas can become the hub of a community’s economic activity, which may accelerate wider efforts aimed at regeneration. Unlike golf there is tremendous demand for new marinas to support unmet demand in the market!

GVA RGA Waterfront were tasked with identifying and providing initial assessments of the development potential for marinas around the coast of Scotland. The results would inform Scottish Development International’s task of aligning prospective investors and developers with suitable locations.

We developed a tailored market research exercise for the study and created a Marina Destination Assessment Matrix to analyse the development potential taking into account a range of factors. We identified a significant number of opportunities that would appeal to different investors. Some schemes were at an advanced stage of the development cycle, others were in the conceptual stages. They varied in nature from small expansions of current facilities to significant new build schemes.

GVA RGA Waterfront have been involved in numerous marina projects and we understand that a marina is more than a boat park – it is a mechanism for developing the tourism, socio-cultural, arts and economic fabric of an area.
