ACE Sustain : Business and Financial Planning

ACE logo Arts Council England (ACE) selected GVA RGA to join its consultancy framework agreement for the Sustain Programme. Sustain is a strategic and practical response by Arts Council England to the pressures that its key arts clients are experiencing as a result of the recession. If an arts organisation provides a service that would need to be replaced in the event of its closure it can apply for a Sustain grant for remedial actions over the next two years. The programme also has the advantage of assisting arts organisations to prepare themselves for a probable downturn in public funding for the arts from 2011 onwards. ACE allocated at least £40m for Sustain.

GVA RGA were selected because of our experience of both the subsidised cultural and commercial hospitality sectors. Our track record of combining the business approach we apply to a hotel or marina project with the skills and professional knowledge used with a theatre or museum is particularly useful when assessing and overcoming recessionary impacts. Our in depth knowledge of the investment framework for arts and culture means we can assist organisations position themselves to anticipate future changes in public funding. We have worked with a number of organisations including Nottingham Contemporary, Bristol Watershed and the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Publicly funded organisations need to prepare themselves for changed market conditions and the anticipated reduction in public spending by Local Authorities and other arts funders. GVA RGA firmly believes that all arts organisations should be reviewing their performance and plans so they are ready for harder times ahead. Questions to be asked include whether your organisation can be leaner; have you made your business case to funders strongly enough; can you do things differently through, for example, joint working? Each arts organisation has a different level of professional capacity in their management team and Board of Directors. Donít hesitate to contact our team if you would like to discuss areas where you may find external support or advice useful.
