Scottish Enterprise Food and Drink Showcase : Economic and Social Assessment

barrels of whisky Scottish Enterprise recognise the importance of motivating businesses in the food sector to work together towards creating a cohesive approach to promoting Scotland as the “land of food and drink.” Their strategy is arranged under four pillars: reputation, collaboration, innovation and skills.

GVA RGA were asked by Scottish Enterprise to explore the viability of an industry showcase. We applied a wide definition of ‘showcase’, to include all initiatives that raise the profile and economic impact of the Scottish food and drink sector. We did not constrain our definition to a particular target market, location or organisational form; these were defined as the research progressed.

The extent of the economic opportunity was very significant. The size of the market means that even a small change in purchasing behaviour could have a major economic impact. There were indications that there were operating inefficiencies within or between agencies, but these were being addressed through Scotland Food and Drink. This was set up in 2007 as a not-for-profit organization to guide food and drink companies of all sizes towards increased profitability.

We spoke to food producers, food and drink processors, tourism businesses, hotels, restaurants, and farmers markets. Also taken into consideration was the Scottish Government’s Food and Drink Policy; an emerging national policy framework for all aspects of food and drink, linking economic gain to health, the environment and education.
